If you use collar stays every time you put on a dress shirt, then it is important that you check to see if collar stays are already sewn in the inner seam pockets of a shirt that you are considering buying, what material it is and whether it is removable.
There are several reasons for this. If you frequently use collar stays and prefer to use your own, then a dress shirt that comes with collar stays already sewn in may not be a good idea for you. This will especially apply if you use good quality brass, stainless steel or other high quality material collar stays because collar stays that come already sewn in, in dress shirts, are made out of plastic. Plastic collar stays are not durable at all and can be bent very easily.
Some of those that are of really poor quality will even melt when you iron your shirt, especially when you can’t remove it. The high end dress shirts from good or luxury brands might come with metal collar stays or may just come with sewn in pockets so that you can insert the collar stays that you want. That’s another thing to check for; whether collar stays pockets are even made in the dress shirt that you want to buy. If the pocket isn’t there and you don’t go out without inserting collar stays, then obviously such a dress shirt will be a waste of your money.
The best option available is a dress shirt with already made collar stays pockets so that the stays can be exchanged by you as and when necessary. Most dress shirt manufacturers will make this feature available to you although do try to cut down on costs by not doing so.
